A walk to remember, autumnal, Dublin, interior photography, Ireland, photos, urban living

On Saturday I had an early morning appointment on the south side of Dublin and since it was nearly wind still and very mild I decided to to walk home. As I walked my new coat (an early birthday present) swished around my legs making me feel happy, and I wasn’t the only one with a smile on my face.

The pleasant autumnal weather was working its magic: people were sitting out side cafes sipping fancy coffees and munching on baked goods, smiling and chatting. Kids were chasing the ducks on the canal as a lone heron flew overhead. Tourists and Dubliners alike had hopped on bikes to discover the city. Urban living at it’s very best.

I decided to take  the long way home and walk down a few streets I didn’t know and I was only sad I didn’t have my camera on me. Instead  I used my old phone (I really do need an upgrade) and did manage to get a few usable shots.

Beach Boys, Dublin, interior photography, Ireland, Love & Mercy, photos, summer, urban summer

This year the Irish summer has been very temperamental – low-ish temperatures , cloudy and rainy days interrupt the warm sunny ones. But  since today the sun has come out to play I have decided to make the best of this urban summer day.

After a morning spent at the desk I will be meeting a friend in town and hopefully the evening sun will invited us to drink some cocktails outside. And to get myself into the mood I have been listening to some Beach Boys – Kokomo; Fun,Fun,Fun & Good Vibrations are truly the perfect soundtrack to a sunny summers day.

Not so coincidentally last week was the opening of Love & Mercy, a film that takes a look at Beach Boy and musical genius Brian Wilson’s breakdown in the late 60s and ‘resurrection’ in the 80s. Lucky me got invited to a day of Beach Boy fun in the sun with pizza and beer, deck chairs and sand – all which all took place in the very urban setting of Dublin’s Smithfield.

So while summer on the beach may be what we all long for – feeling sand between our toes and the waves against our legs – most of us have to make do with an urban variation – glistening asphalt and packed parks.

But I have decided to make the most of my urban summer and don my sunglasses in style and let the Beach Boys do the rest!

acceptence, compliment, compliments, interior photography, photos, quotes, rejection

sniffYesterday, I got a compliment and I have to admit that I didn’t quite know what to do with it. Being criticized is easier as I don’t need to except it, can argue it or I can learn from it, even if it initially hurts.  But compliments are somewhat different and do tend to make me feel a little bit awkward.

There are three main ways to deal with compliments: acceptance, rejection and deflection. It seems that most of us have a hard time with just gracefully or humbly accepting a compliment paid, as we often feel it makes us come across as boastful, proud or conceited.

But we also know that to reject a compliment outright isn’t the way to go either, as it is just plain rude. So what I do, like so many others, is deflect or dilute the compliment paid. A little “really – I didn’t think it was that great” or a “oh this old dress, nothing special – got it at Pennys”  or even a “but you did so much better” , takes the wind out of that compliment sail and calms the hurricane of emotions within.

But I can’t help but wonder that, maybe, deflection is just as rude as rejection. In a way by diluting a compliment you are telling the giver that you don’t really rate their opinion, you are putting them down as you don’t respect their input.

Maybe this stems from low-self esteem, of lack of self-worth or some odd sense of wanting to seem polite, courteous and unpretentious, but that doesn’t make it okay. So, the more I think about it, the more it becomes clear: accepting a compliment when given, is the only right way to go.

I suppose the trick is in how to do it  properly and possibly there is only one way to do so. No shy looking away, no “buts”, no deflecting or playing compliment wars, just look the person in the eye, maybe smile and say two simple small words: “thank you” .

The happiness of life is made up of minute fractions – the little, soon forgotten charities of a kiss or a smile, a kind look or heartfelt compliment.

This week’s Photo Challenge was set by Swiss-based architect and photographer Frédéric Biver (fakeormistake).  He is asking for two images that are in DIALOGUE with each other and explains:  “dialogue in photography can be perceived as a consensual interaction between two images. Placed next to each other, each photograph opens up to meanings that weren’t there when viewed alone. Each composition reveals the photographer’s specific sensitivity to certain content or visual elements.”

While going through some of my photos for this specific challenge, I noticed that several motives keep coming up, one being lifebuoys. Dublin is situation by the sea, water is always present and always a potential danger. So no matter if you are walking the streets of Dublin or wandering on the beach you’ll always find these reminders.

On Sunday my neigbour and I wandered down the road, over the bridge and behind a church to take a look at the Dlight studio market. Hidden down a small road and up a tiny staircase was a big surprise in form of a  fantastic venue and few stalls.

decoration I may have been a little bit disappointed about the amount of perusing possibilities but I was very taken with the visually exciting venue. And since I had the foresight to take my camera with me I took a few shoots.  I even had a chat with the organiser and she told me that next time there would be more stalls as it was holiday season and many of the regulars would be back. So here is hoping for anew market hot spot just up the road from me.  tappink
