hay fever alert

antihistamnines, calcium, hay fever, health, magnesium, pills, sticky eyes

I woke up with  a little surprise in bed with me this morning, sticky eyes are back and that can only mean one thing: hay-fever season has arrived and settled in over night.

Hay-fever visits me every year, sometimes it is just little a bit annoying, sometimes it needs a bit more attention, and other times it takes over my life. I am not sure what the sneezer has planned for this year but if my sticky eyes and scratchy throat are anything to go by it definitely is an attention seeker.

So while I spent a huge chunk of my morning un-gunking my eyes, yes I had those awfully gooey bits of yellow sleepy-eye gluing my eyelashes together and keeping me in semi-darkness, I was wondering if it was time to start popping pills and save myself from sneeze attacks. The problem is most antihistamines effect me more than just a little on the side.

Some make me so drowsy that I can’t string sentences together and just want to sleep, some effect my skin (I have eczema)  and leave me with itchiness and sometimes red patches of flakiness. Other pills have been known to make me a little high, a little depressed or just don’t work. But I do own some white oval pills that do the job and only make me sluggish, turning work into a bit of a herculean task. Sadly as I have quite a lot to do today I don’t think those little friendly helpers are an option and I will just have to keep tissues by my side and try not to spray my computer.

But while I was contemplating my possibilities I wondered about alternative options, I have tried acupuncture and homeopathy in the past and they didn’t work, although I do know that others have had more success. I have tried upping my calcium and magnesium intake and it does partially work as it makes the sneezes less moist and my eyes a little clearer. So as I munch on a banana and spoon some yogurt I am hoping it will help me be less irritated and keep Mr Hay-fever at bay.

sniffles

I woke up this morning confused. I couldn’t figure out why I was having an allergic reaction, after all nothing is in bloom right now, but my nose was running as were my eyes. Then it hit me, I didn’t have hay-fever I have the  sniffles!

It isn’t a full blown cold yet, just a bit of a sore head and throat, a little stuffiness and watery eyes. And since I am not really sick, juts a little under the weather and I don’t need to go anywhere today I decided to take a pyjama day. After all I think it is better to nip those pesky bugs in the bud before I end up with a full blown flu.

So I snuggled down with my book and read, ignoring that it is a week day and enjoying myself thoroughly. I didn’t even open my blinds , blending the world out for a little while, savouring my hot tea and cosy cardigan.

As the day has moved on so has my sniffles, my head is back to normal and my throat seems on its way there too. Only my eyes and nose seem to have turned their running into a marathon, but I think after a good nights sleep and an easy weekend Monday will find me fully restored back to health.

And since I have  a busy week ahead of me, preparing the last bits and bobs before the semester begins, making sure everything is order and getting my scheduled back on track. But for now I’ll enjoy my PJ-day, the last one for  along while.

Life is full of sniffles, sobs and smiles. With sniffles predominating. – O. Henry

all dressed up nowhere to go

I’m all dressed up and have nowhere to go, well that is not really true, I did have somewhere to go but my hay-fever had other ideas. This morning I was meant to go to my monthly Sex and the City brunch with some girl-friends of mine but when I woke up this morning and tried to open my eyes I was left in darkness and had to pry them open with a combination of warm water, cotton wool and a lot of giving out.

So while my friends sat and chatted, ate, drank and laughed, I muttered, sneezed, blew my nose and dabbed my eyes until I finally gave in and swallowed  a pill. Now my eyes are slowly clearing up, my nose has stopped running and has slowed down to a steady dribble, but sadly it is now the afternoon and it’s too late for breakfast, brunch or even lunch.

But all is not lost as I will meet up with a friend later and we will enjoy some evening sightseeing and catching up. She is here visiting from Memphis, the city of Elvis and Rock ‘n Roll, but she is German and I met her many, many, many moons ago at University in Bamberg, Germany. We where both part of the drama group, I was on the boards and she was all around them, doing everything to make the production work. I just hope the weather will clear up and we can enjoy a beautiful Irish evening in Howth.

So while the pile of tissues steadily grows my patience with hay-fever is declining at a  a rapid rate. Sadly although it is  only a small protrusion on my face it has the power to render all my other extremities nonfunctional as the pill is kicking in and making me dopy so i think it’s time for a nap … or at least curl up and watch a movie with a cup of tea and a new box of Kleenex.
