As someone who loves to read and as someone who designs magazines I have to admit that I sometimes pick the books that i buy based on their cover. Sometimes it’s the title of the book, sometimes it’s the blurb on the back but sometimes if I like the look of a book I may just pick it up and purchase it.
Now I know that many believe you “cannot judge” a book by it’s cover, but I don’t believe that to be true, if I don’t like the dustcover, if it doesn’t speak to me or if it shows me that the book is based in a specific genre I do judge a book by it’s outer appearance, whether or not that is a good thing.
And yes, maybe I don’t end up reading some very good books because my method of choice rules them out, but sometimes I end up reading surprisings ones, ones only end up on my shelf because I like the look of them.
I share with you buying books for their cover, and the same is true for wine. Labels are a real attraction.
Yes wine too… If i like the lable i am willkng to try it
I so understand … pretty labels on wine make me want to at least try them!
First it has to catch our eye in some way; get our attention. After that we delve deeper, into the words and the story and make a judgment based on that. I think the same is true of people…

very true … and sometimes it’s just the words that make us friends 🙂
I think the cover has a huge influence on the books we buy, except of course for the big-time authors. But if the author is unknown the cover makes a big difference!
but even f it is a known author and the cover is crappy I may not buy the book … visual can be so influencing
i do the same. i sometimes pick books i have never heard of based on cover art. some of them turn out to be good, and some not so great but it’s still a big part of why i buy certain things. 🙂
me too …
I like your honesty… because I think we all do that from time to time.. Diane
yes … and we all get it right and sometimes so wrong!
